DDoS Protection for your cloud servers

In a DDoS attack, many systems send so much traffic to your server at the same time that your website, your game server or your API can no longer be reached. DDoS Protection filters this traffic for every IPv4 address of your cloud servers, which we call Seeds, right at our network edge. Your users' traffic keeps reaching your server.

From the internet to your Seed

Any filter recognizes large attacks by their volume. Targeted attacks, on the other hand, look like real requests. Follow the traffic to your Seed and see where which filters step in.

Internet

How a DDoS attack works

DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. Attackers control a botnet for this, thousands of compromised computers and devices that send traffic to one target at the same time on command. It is not about breaking in but about availability: servers, networks or applications are meant to be so overloaded that they only respond with long delays or fail completely.

Real requests

Page views, game moves, logins, API calls: everything your users send to your service and expect an answer to.

Attack packets

Volumetric attacks exhaust the bandwidth. Protocol attacks exploit weaknesses in network protocols to strain servers and network devices. Application attacks send expensive requests to a single application. The methods are often combined to get around protective measures.

What an attack does

A server has limited resources: bandwidth, connections, computing time. Under attack, almost all of them go to the attack traffic, and real requests are answered with a delay or not at all. For a publicly reachable service, the question is usually not whether it will be attacked, but when.

Checkout breaks

Shop customers hit a timeout in the middle of paying, and every outage costs revenue.

Players get kicked

On game servers, connections drop, the server lags, the community moves on.

The service is unreachable

APIs, VPN and internal tools go down, for everyone at once.

You stay in control

For every IPv4 address of your Seeds, you decide how it is protected. Switch modes and see which traffic reaches your Seed.

The automatic filters are included. You neither have to book nor set up the protection. We already limit volumetric attacks at our network edge. The automatic filters recognize common attack patterns on their own.

Where automatic filters fall short

A targeted attack on an application is enough to take down a game server or a login. The automatic filters recognize attacks by their volume and by clearly invalid traffic. Targeted attacks stick to the protocol and look like real requests at network level. To recognize them, the filter has to know how your service normally talks.

Every detail of an attack at a glance

You see ongoing attacks on your IP addresses in real time in the console. Once an attack ends, each entry lists every detail: start and duration, attack vectors, peak traffic, origin by countries, networks and source IPs, and the targeted ports and protocols. From this, you work out how to adjust your filters.

Create a Seed

What you can do yourself

Even with DDoS protection, it pays to keep the attack surface small, especially for game servers.

Open only the ports you need

Use a firewall to close everything that does not need to be publicly reachable. Databases and admin panels do not belong on the internet.

Restrict admin access

Allow SSH and remote consoles only from known IP addresses or through a VPN.

Choose the right filter

Services such as WireGuard, SSH or Web have tailored filters. They know the protocol and let real connections through.

Limit connections per IP address

Many server programs come with limits for connections and requests per IP address. Turn them on.

Keep software up to date

Updates close gaps that attackers could otherwise exploit with just a few packets.

Watch for attacks

The console shows attacks on your IP addresses with peak values and origin, so you can tighten your filters where needed.

Control DDoS Protection through the Public API

With our Public API, you set custom filters from your scripts or your deployment pipeline, for example right after creating a Seed.

Questions about DDoS Protection

Do I need to book or enable DDoS Protection?

No. The automatic filters are included for every IPv4 address of your Seeds and active from the first start. They limit volumetric attacks at our network edge and recognize common attack patterns on their own. You only book the custom filters if you want to protect specific applications in a targeted way.

Can I enable custom filters during an ongoing attack?

Yes. Changes to the filters roll out within a few seconds. That way you can turn on protection for an application or block a suspicious network or country while the attack is still running.

Can I switch the custom filters off again?

Yes, at any time and per IP address. Your configuration is kept, so you can switch the filters back on just as quickly. You are only billed for the hours in which the filters are set.

How are custom filters billed?

By the hour: you only pay for the hours in which custom filters are set, at most the monthly price per IPv4 address. The price stays the same, no matter for how many applications and sources you set filters.

How do I know my Seed is under attack?

You see ongoing attacks on your IP addresses in real time in the cloud console. Once an attack ends, each entry lists start and duration, attack vectors, peak traffic, origin by countries, networks and source IPs, and the targeted ports and protocols. From this, you can tell how to adjust your filters.

Can I control DDoS Protection through the API?

Yes. Through the Public API, you retrieve the protection of your IP addresses, including ongoing attacks and the attacks of the last 30 days. You set, enable and disable custom filters through actions, for example right from your deployment pipeline. You will find all endpoints in the API documentation.

How is this different from a firewall?

A firewall on your Seed only kicks in once the traffic has already reached your server. During an attack, the line is already saturated by then. DDoS Protection filters beforehand in our network and only lets valid traffic through. A firewall on the Seed still makes sense to close ports you do not need.

Does DDoS Protection also protect against Layer 7 attacks?

DDoS Protection works on Layers 3 and 4, the network and transport level. Custom filters know the protocols of your applications but do not replace a web application firewall. Against attacks at application level, such as masses of HTTP requests to a login, rate limits in your application or an upstream reverse proxy help as well.

Can I also protect servers that don't run with you?

Yes, with a Seed as a DDoS proxy. The Seed takes over the public address, our filters protect it, and an encrypted tunnel carries only the clean traffic to your server, whether it runs at another provider, at home or in your own data center. When the proxy is the right choice and when moving to a Seed is, is covered in the DDoS protection solution. The DDoS proxy guide walks you through the setup.

What is a DDoS attack?

DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. Attackers control a botnet, thousands of compromised computers and devices that send traffic to one target at the same time on command. It is not about breaking in but about availability: servers, networks or applications are meant to be so overloaded that they only respond with long delays or fail completely.

What types of DDoS attacks are there?

Volumetric attacks exhaust the bandwidth. Protocol attacks exploit weaknesses in network protocols to strain servers and network devices. Application attacks send expensive requests to a single application and look like real requests while doing so. The methods are often combined to get around protective measures.

Why can my server no longer be reached during a DDoS attack?

A server has limited resources: bandwidth, connections, computing time. Under attack, almost all of them go to the attack traffic, and real requests are answered with a delay or not at all. Players drop off the game server, checkouts break off, and APIs and VPNs fail for everyone at once.

What can I do against DDoS attacks myself?

Keep the attack surface small: open only the ports that need to be publicly reachable, and allow SSH and remote consoles only from known IP addresses or through a VPN. Turn on the limits for connections and requests per IP address that many server programs come with, and keep your software up to date. On its own, this does not help against large attacks, because they hit your line before your server can react. For that, you need protection in the network in front of it.
