Nextcloud keeps your team's files, calendars and contacts on your own Seed. Desktop clients for Windows, macOS and Linux and mobile apps for iOS and Android keep folders in sync across all devices. Share folders directly with colleagues, or send clients a link protected by a password and an expiry date. Calendars and address books connect to your mail client and phone via CalDAV and CardDAV. You can create users in the web interface or pull them from your directory via LDAP, and the built-in App Store adds tools such as Nextcloud Talk for chat and video calls. Nextcloud is open source and free to use.
After the first boot
About 2 to 5 minutes after the Seed is created, Nextcloud 35.0.1 is available at the Seed's address, with the Calendar and Contacts apps already installed. You can check progress via SSH or the Seed's VNC console. Once the installation has finished, /root/ready.txt shows the address and username. If it fails, /root/failed.txt appears instead, and /root/nextcloud-install.log has the details. Until one of the two files appears, setup is still running.
Log in as admin. The password is in /root/nextcloud-credentials.txt, together with the MariaDB credentials. After the first login, change it under Personal settings > Security and add your email address under Personal info. To let Nextcloud send invitations and password reset links, configure a mail server under Administration settings > Basic settings.
The Seed runs Apache, PHP 8.4 with PHP-FPM, MariaDB 11.8 and Redis on Debian 13. A systemd timer starts the background jobs every 5 minutes, and Certbot renews the certificate automatically. The optional variable DEFAULT_PHONE_REGION sets the country Nextcloud assumes for phone numbers entered without a country code. The default is DE.
To run Nextcloud under your own domain, point the domain's A record to the Seed's IPv4 address and run seed-tls domain cloud.example.com over SSH. The command checks the DNS record, requests the certificate and switches Nextcloud to the domain.
Our guide Set up your own cloud with Nextcloud shows how to connect desktop clients and phones and how to sync calendars and contacts.
