We set up Docker Engine and Docker Compose from the official Docker repository on your Seed. Describe an application with its database and reverse proxy in a compose.yaml and start it with docker compose up -d. Compose files from your local development setup run on the Seed with the same commands. Pull images from Docker Hub or your own registry, and build your own with Buildx right on the Seed. Docker Engine, Compose and Buildx are licensed under Apache 2.0 and free for commercial use.
After the first boot
Docker is ready 1 to 2 minutes after the Seed is created. The setup installs Docker Engine 29.8.1, containerd 2.3.6, Docker Compose 5.5.1 and Buildx 0.37.1 from the official Docker repository for Debian 13.
Once /root/ready.txt appears on the Seed, Docker has already run a test container. If the installation fails, /root/failed.txt appears instead, and /root/docker-install.log has the full log. Until one of the two files appears, the installation is still running.
Log in via SSH as root and work directly with docker and docker compose. Log rotation in /etc/docker/daemon.json keeps three 10 MB files per container, and changed log options apply to new containers after systemctl restart docker. Install updates from the Docker repository with apt update && apt upgrade. Containers with restart: unless-stopped or always start again after an update and after a reboot of the Seed.
Docker networks use IPv4 only by default, which is why the Seed gets a public IPv4 address when it is created. Docker opens every port you publish with -p or under ports: directly in iptables. A firewall under Network > Firewalls controls which of them are reachable from the internet.
Our guides on Vaultwarden, Ghost and Strapi walk through a complete Docker Compose stack in the section “Path B: Installation via Docker Compose”. You can skip their first step, “Install Docker”, on this Seed.
